About the 628 area code

Since 2015, area code 628 has supplied numbers to San Francisco, California, and nearby communities including Daly City, San Rafael, Novato, and Mill Valley, all on Pacific time.

The code never received territory of its own. It was introduced as an overlay across the area already served by area code 415, its lone complex partner, and the two have issued numbers side by side ever since, with local calls dialed at ten digits.

Dialing note: 628 is part of an overlay complex with 415, so local calls in this area are dialed with all ten digits.

Numbering details on this page (service dates and overlay status) are checked against the NANPA numbering registry. Registry data as of 10/08/2026.
