Second number apps: FAQ
- Which second number apps have a free plan?
- As of October 2026, TextNow, TextFree and Google Voice (US only) have free plans, and AvoCall has a free, ad-supported plan with limited free US and Canada calling and texting. Sideline, OpenPhone (now Quo), Hushed and Burner are paid apps, and some of them offer a short free trial. magicJack's app is free only alongside its paid home phone device.
- Do I need a second SIM card for a second number?
- No, not for any of these apps. AvoCall, TextFree, Hushed and OpenPhone (now Quo) place calls over Wi-Fi or mobile data. Google Voice can use data or your carrier minutes, and Sideline and Burner use your carrier minutes for calls by default. TextNow also sells an optional SIM or eSIM, and magicJack's home service uses a plug-in device.
- Which apps offer Canadian numbers?
- AvoCall, TextNow, TextFree, Hushed and OpenPhone (now Quo) offer Canadian numbers, and magicJack sells them at extra cost. Sideline offers US numbers only, Google Voice's free and individual plans are US only, and Burner's pages describe choosing a US area code.
- Can second number apps receive verification codes?
- It depends on the app and the sender. Many services send codes from short codes, and several apps limit them: OpenPhone (now Quo) can't receive short-code texts, some banks won't text Google Voice numbers, TextFree keeps codes for its paid plan, TextNow needs its SIM or a paid add-on, and on AvoCall compatibility varies by sender. No app can promise every code will arrive.
