Choose a travel eSIM when you need mobile internet abroad. Choose a US number app when you need a separate US number for calls and texts over the internet. You may need both. A data connection and a reachable phone number solve different problems.
The word eSIM describes how a mobile plan is installed, not what the plan includes. Some travel plans are data-only; others include voice and SMS. Airalo's plan-type guidance explains that distinction. Check the specific plan instead of assuming every eSIM includes a phone number.
Compare the services before your trip
| What you need | Data-only travel eSIM | US number app such as AvoCall |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile internet for maps and apps | Yes, within the plan's coverage and data allowance | No; you bring Wi-Fi or mobile data |
| A separate US number people can call | Not included in a data-only plan | Yes, after eligible signup and number activation |
| Ordinary calls and SMS on the purchased service | Not included in a data-only plan | In the app, subject to plan allowances and compatibility |
| Preserve your existing carrier number | No | AvoCall does not currently accept port-ins |
| Work with no internet connection | Data service itself requires mobile coverage | No |
| Emergency calling | Do not assume a data-only travel plan supplies it | AvoCall does not support emergency calling |
A voice-and-text travel plan is a third option. Check its number country, incoming-call rules and international calling restrictions separately.
Three practical travel setups
You only need maps, messaging apps and browsing
A suitable data plan may be enough. If everyone you contact already uses the same messaging app, you may not need another phone number. Check coverage for each destination, device compatibility, hotspot rules and when the plan's validity starts.
You want mobile data plus a separate US number
Use the travel eSIM for internet access and an app number for calls and texts. AvoCall offers US and Canada numbers by area code. Its calls use the selected data connection; it does not supply the data plan itself.
Set up before departure. New AvoCall mobile-app signup currently requires a supported mobile number and internet location in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom or Ireland. Android users can install from Google Play; the iPhone installation route currently uses TestFlight beta. Confirm both services work before relying on them.
You must retain your old number for important accounts
Keep that carrier line active or investigate a supported port before cancelling. A travel eSIM and a new AvoCall number do not transfer your old number. Read how to keep a US number abroad for that decision.
Airalo's dual-line guidance explains how one line can handle voice and SMS while the other provides data. Charges on the original line remain subject to your home carrier's roaming terms.
Keep the two bills separate
Your travel provider bills for its data or mobile plan. AvoCall bills separately for its number plan and any wallet-funded international calls. Check AvoCall pricing and destination rates before paying. AvoCall+ has no included international minutes. Its US and Canada calling and texting is subject to the fair use policy.
The free AvoCall offer is currently available to eligible new Android accounts. Do not budget for that offer on iPhone. Verification-text visibility is a paid benefit, and even on AvoCall+ some senders reject virtual numbers. Keep bank recovery methods independent of an untested new number.
A five-minute preparation checklist
- Check that your phone supports the eSIM and is eligible for the chosen network.
- Install both services and complete account verification before travel.
- Select the intended data line; check data switching and roaming settings with your carrier.
- Test incoming and outgoing app calls, ordinary texts and background notifications.
- Keep a local way to make emergency calls and a backup way to access important accounts.
For iPhone line settings, use Apple's Dual SIM guide. For an app-only setup, see a second number on iPhone without a SIM.

Frequently asked questions
Does a travel eSIM give me a US phone number?
Not necessarily. A data-only travel eSIM does not provide ordinary voice calls or SMS. Some plans include a number and voice or text service, so check the exact plan type and number country before buying.
Can AvoCall use a travel eSIM's data?
AvoCall calls and texts use an internet connection, which can come from Wi-Fi or mobile data. A travel eSIM can supply that data where its coverage and network access support the app. Data charges and connection quality still apply.
Will buying a travel eSIM keep my old US number?
No. Buying a separate travel eSIM does not preserve your old carrier number. Keep the original service active or arrange a supported transfer before cancelling it. AvoCall currently provides new numbers and does not accept port-ins.
