A second phone number lets you text and call matches without giving out your real number. You share the second number when a conversation moves off the dating app, keep your personal number for people you already trust, and you can block or stop answering the second number at any time without changing the number your friends and family use.

Why your personal number is worth protecting

Your personal number is connected to a lot: messaging apps, payment apps, contact syncing, and accounts that let people find you by phone number. Sharing it with someone you have only chatted with for a day gives them a direct line to you long after the conversation ends.

A second number changes that. It is still a real number your match can call and text, but it is not the one attached to your bank, your family group chat, or your other accounts.

How to set up a second number for dating

  1. Get a second number app. Download AvoCall on iPhone or Android. It works over Wi-Fi or mobile data next to the SIM you already have, so there is no second phone to carry.
  2. Pick a local number. Choose a number by area code or city. A local area code looks ordinary to someone in your city.
  3. Use it once a chat moves off the app. Keep early conversations inside the dating app. When you are ready to text, give out your second number.
  4. Save matches as contacts. Add a first name and where you matched, so you know who is texting when a new message arrives.
  5. Keep your personal number for later. Share it only once you have met and feel comfortable, or never. That is your call.

Second number vs. other ways to keep your number private

Share your personal numberLowestEasiest, but hard to take back

Plenty of people mix these. Chat in the app first, move to a second number, and share a personal number only with someone you are seeing regularly.

Dating safety habits that go with it

A second number is one layer of privacy, not a full safety plan. Pair it with habits that protect you in person too:

  • Video chat before you meet. A short video call helps confirm the person is who their profile says.
  • Meet somewhere public and arrange your own way there and back.
  • Tell a friend where you are going and who you are meeting.
  • Never send money or gift cards to someone you have not met, however good the reason sounds.
  • Never share a verification code. If a match asks you to read back a code "to prove you're real", it is a scam. Codes come from the service sending them, and anyone asking for one is trying to get into an account.
  • Trust your gut. If something feels off, stop replying and block the number.

What AvoCall gives you for this

  • A US or Canada number you choose, for calls and texts in the AvoCall app
  • Calls and texts from the app that use your AvoCall number by default, so your personal number stays private
  • A blocked numbers list in Settings
  • Voicemail, with transcription on AvoCall+
  • A free, ad-supported plan for eligible new Android accounts with limited minutes and texts, or AvoCall+ for unlimited US and Canada calls and texts (fair use policy applies); see current pricing

Two limits to know: some dating apps may not accept a virtual number for sign-up verification (see can a virtual number receive verification texts?), and on the free plan a number can be released after the inactivity period shown in the app. If you plan to keep the number for a while, AvoCall+ keeps it for as long as you are subscribed.

Use it kindly

Privacy works both ways. A second number is for keeping your own life separate, not for getting around someone else's boundaries. If someone blocks you or asks you to stop, stop. AvoCall's Acceptable Use Policy bans harassment and stalking, and accounts that break it can be suspended or closed.

Frequently asked questions

Should I give my real number to a match?

You do not have to. Many people share a second number first, then share their personal number only after they have met and feel comfortable. A second number lets you keep talking off the app without handing over a number tied to the rest of your life.

Can I sign up for a dating app with a second number?

Sometimes. Some dating apps verify sign-ups by text and may not accept virtual numbers, and it varies by app. A second number is most useful for the conversations you move off the app, which is where your personal number usually gets shared.

Will my match see my real number if I call from AvoCall?

Calls and texts you place in the AvoCall app use your AvoCall number by default, so your match sees that number, not your personal one.

Can I block someone on my second number?

Yes. AvoCall has a blocked numbers list in Settings, so you can stop a number from reaching you without changing your own.

Is it okay to use a second number to contact someone who blocked me?

No. Using any number to contact someone who has blocked you is harassment. AvoCall's Acceptable Use Policy bans harassment and stalking, and accounts that break it can be suspended or closed.
